Kay-Leigh Nicholas became the first South African casualty at the Nike Junior Tour International Masters Tennis Tournament being played in Torino, Italy, when she lost her second round Under-12 match to fifth-seed Justine de Sutter in three sets on Tuesday.
Nicholas played well after dropping the first set 3-6 to the Belgian, and leveled the match a set each after taking the second set 6-0, but her steam ran out, and the third set ended 6-2 in de Sutter’s favour.
Nicholas now meets unseeded Austrian Jacqueline Zagler in Wednesday’s consolation play-off, starting 10am local time, after the Zagler suffered a first-round loss to Italian Georgia Brescia in straight sets.
Also in action on Wednesday, Under-14 fourth-seed Kaylea Sher will be looking for a place in the semifinals, and takes on fifth-seeded American Ellen Tsay, who progressed 6-2 6-0 effortlessly through a second-round fixture against Swedish Beatrice Cedermark, after an opening round bye.
Sher, by contrast, was made to fight for her 7-5 7-6(8) victory over second-round opponent, Germany’s Sarah-Maria Richter.
