gsport Editor, Kass Naidoo, had the honour of interviewing accomplished eNews Channel Africa sport reporter, Hloni Mtimkulu, who has risen to great heights in her career. In this in-depth interview, Mtimkulu chats about winning at the 2019 Momentum gsport Awards ceremony, the challenges of being a woman in on-screen media as well as the continuous rise of women in sport.
In August this year, Mtimkulu was honoured at the 2019 Momentum gsport Awards where she was crowned the Brand South Africa Woman in Television winner and pointed out that she is grateful to know that she is being rebcognised for her work.
“I think that the win was very validating. Not that you need validation from people but it really does do something for you to know that people are recognising you in some way and I think the big thing about gsport is that you’re not putting your name in for it and that makes a huge difference,” she said.
The media platform is notoriously known to be a very competitive industry, but the support that Mtimkulu has received, especially over the months leading up to the gsport awards ceremony, made a difference in how she has viewed her colleagues as they have lauded her for her contribution in the sporting arena.
“That makes a huge difference and I think that of all the awards that there are out there, that is the one thing about the gsport Awards, it’s not you saying that, it’s all your industry colleagues and in case you don’t know where you are in the industry, you’re wondering about your place because I have been, this helps you.
“It gives you some confidence. It gives you some grounding in some ways. Again, not that you need that validation, but it does help you in sort of finding your place and knowing where you are, mapping your way, mapping your thoughts, that sort of thing,” she added.
“The interview itself was affirming, as so much of the whole gsport process has been.” – eNCA reporter, Hloni Mtimkulu on being interviewed by gsport4girls.
Having spent around nine years building her name in the industry, it has never been smooth sailing for the passionate woman in sport, but she has managed to push above her weight and become a household name working for eNCA.
“I have been at eNCA for just over six years now, so I think that this six years at eNCA is the one that has been the solid time of broadcasting.”
She continued to chat about her how her career all started and the progress that has taken place over the years to where she is today, and how women’s sport in South Africa has evolved.
Mtimkulu shared her excitement about her interview with gsport4girls, saying that the overall package is every broadcaster’s dream to witness.
“I watched the interview on Friday (22 November 2019). As I told Ryk (Meiring), it was so well-edited. Didn’t imagine the cutaways he and Valencia were shooting would end up that way. So that’s the first (important) thing – as a broadcaster. The interview itself was affirming, as so much of the whole gsport process has been.”
The sky is the limit for Mtimkulu who will be eager to take on 2020 with the intention of continuing to own her success.
