Athletics South Africa (ASA) have announced on Wednesday that rising star Constance Mkenku (Free State), will spearhead the South African Junior Team’s medal attack at the African Junior Championships in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso from 09 – 12 August.
The new sprint sensation, who revealed her best to a stunned Algiers audience at the All Africa Games recently, heads a talented women’s compliment of 10 women, joining a group of 23 young men in the team representing the cream of South Africa’s athletics.
Mkenku sent shockwaves through the Athletics family after her surprise silver medal at the All Africa Games in Algiers recently. On her way to the medal she set personal bests in every round (11.40sec, 11.34sec and 11.27sec).
Not only were the pundits surprised, but so was Mkenku, she had hoped to get to the semifinals, never mind the finals or a medal.
If Mkenku is able to reproduce those times, then she will be a sure fire bet for a medal in Ouagadougou. But Mkenku isn’t the only medal hopeful.
Marcoleen Pretorius won Bronze at the All Africa Games in the High Jump. The tough competition environment she faced in Algiers would have been a solid preparation platform for the youngster from the Vaal Triangle.
