South Africa’s women’s tennis team delivered a spirited performance at the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Group II in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, narrowly missing out on promotion after a determined campaign.
Led by captain Roxanne Clarke, the team exceeded expectations by winning three of their four Group B ties. The South Africans secured impressive victories over Egypt (2-1), Morocco (3-0), and North Macedonia (3-0), showcasing both depth and resilience. Their only group-stage setback came against Bulgaria, who claimed a 3-0 win.
Despite the loss, South Africa progressed to the semifinals, where they faced a strong Greek side in the promotion playoffs. Greece ultimately proved too experienced, winning the tie 2-0. Despina Papamichail defeated Isabella Kruger 6-2, 6-3, while former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari overcame Jahnie van Zyl 6-4, 6-1. The doubles match was not played after Greece secured victory.
South Africa’s campaign was highlighted by standout performances from Kruger and the promising 17-year-old Van Zyl, both of whom won four of their seven matches across singles and doubles.
Captain Clarke praised her squad’s effort and determination:
“I’m very proud of the girls and their performances. They really put it all out there and pulled off some wins many didn’t expect. We put ourselves in a position to be promoted, and although we fell short, I’m very happy with the team’s commitment and belief.”
The team’s strong showing signals a bright future, with a blend of experience and youth forming a competitive unit. South Africa will look to build on this momentum when they return to compete in the tournament next season.
