In last week’s gsport Twitter Space Thursday, host Oarabile Diphoko was joined by Football Sponsorship Coordinator at Hollywoodbets, Indira Albuquerque, following the conclusion of the Hollywoodbets Super League season.
Speaking ahead of the end of season awards ceremony, which took place on Saturday, 3 December 2022, Albuquerque mentioned: “I am very excited and myself and the team have been working hard to do some last minute preparations, along with SAFA and the SABC for the live broadcast of the awards.
“I think it’s always good to recognise the women who are doing really great for their respective teams. Another thing we have added to this year’s awards is rewarding the referees. We know that officials tend to be overlooked, so for me that’s an exciting part to add to the awards.”
With women’s football developing well in recent months, Albuquerque added: “We all know that women’s sport in general are underfunded in this country. So when you see brands and companies coming onboard it really does come at a great deal.
“I started out as a football player and seeing so many talented women not having opportunities that their counterparts have in making it to professional clubs ,going overseas or even have their basic human needs being covered, is hard. There is an improvement but at the same time, it’s not enough.”
At the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards in September, Hollywoodbets walked away with the Nielsen Sports South Africa Sponsor of the Year accolade.
Speaking about the recognition, Albuquerque said: “Firstly, I’d like to thank gsport for the platform. They’ve been phenomenal in recognising women who are doing really great in sport.
To be part of that department and winning the award meant so much to me personally because of my journey in sport. For Hollywoodbets as a whole, we were so ecstatic because we go out and do this investment in women’s sport, not for the recognition but for the uprising for the development of women’s football.”
Diphoko was also joined by Sponsorship specialist at FNB, Shafeeqah Isaacs. Click here to listen to the full gsport Twitter Space conversation.
