2022 has been nothing short of amazing where women’s sport is concerned, as athletes have continuously shattered barriers beyond the imagination of sport fanatics.
There has been a number of ground-breaking highlights that we have come to witness from football to judo, seeing new names coming to light, unearthed by the hard work they put in. And if that’s how 2022 was, the year of women’s sport in 2023 will be one for the books.
As we wind down the year and reflect on 2022, gsport chatted to a few South African athletes to reflect on the year.
Leading Banyana Banyana and Momentum gsport Awards Telkom Woman of the Year finalist, Andile Dlamini, has proven how consistency has impact on her career this year.
“Firstly, winning the WAFCON and getting goalkeeper of the tournament award. For me it was consistency, taking what happened in 2021 when I won goalkeeper of the tournament with my club and it was late 2021… so it’s more like consistency for me. Winning the Woman of the Year for Tshwane Region and also been nominated for the Momentum gsport Awards.
Dlamini added, “Winning at the Feather Awards and winning the Hollywood Super League.”
2022 Momentum gsport Awards Emerging Athlete of the Year and Ministerial Recognition Awards recipient, Phiwokuhle Mnguni is another name never to be forgotten for what she has done for the boxing fraternity globally.
The boxer won bronze at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, the first South African to achieve this feat.
“I can definitely say it was when I stood in podium in England receiving my medal, I knew that medal was going to open many doors for me.”
2022 Basketball National League champion and MVP, Corinne Moussi has had a good year and will definitely be waiting to see what 2023 has in store for her and definitely one name to keep an eye on.
Moussi’s 2022 sporting career highlights has been one to call a year of a champion, which also include winning the Cape Town Basketball League and WBNL All Star.
