In last week’s athlete edition of our weekly gsport Twitter Space Thursday, gsport writer Oarabile Diphoko dived into conversation with Banyana Banyana and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies goalkeeper, Andile Dlamini, as well as Netball South Africa’s Didintle Keebine.

Following their CAF Women’s League final defeat to ASFAR in Morocco, Dlamini spoke about the team’s journey on the continent as they looked to defend the title they had previously won in 2021.

“Sticks”, as Dlamini is popularly known, joined the conversation while traveling on a bus from Mpumalanga to Johannesburg from a Hollywoodbets Super League match, just days after losing the CAF Women’s Champions league final.

“Obviously this is what I do for a living. When you walk onto the pitch, you know that there are three possible results and on that day, we have had to accept the fact that we had lost and needed to return home, to focus on the domestic league and honour the games that we have left.”

Heading into the CAF Women’s champions league final against ASFAR, Dlamini says: “We went there as defending champions, and everybody wanted to beat Mamelodi Sundowns. There was just so much pressure on everyone including the referee’s because the women’s game has grown so much.”

Speaking on the having supporters in stadiums to be the 12th voice, Dlamini revealed: “Fans can have an impact when it comes to how people perform on the day and we need supporters to come in numbers to stadiums, because they bring the sponsors to us.”
