Momentum Proteas all-rounder, Anneke Bosch, remains positive and upbeat after surgery to her fractured thumb which she sustained during the South Africa vs West Indies series.
During the third ODI at Imperial Wanderers stadium, Bosch was fielding at extra cover and miss judged the distance of the ball from the ground, resulting in the ball hitting her thumb full on.
This led to Bosch being retrieved from the Momentum Proteas squad ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand.
Speaking to gsport, the 28-year-old says: “I was quite devastated and very disappointed when our team doctor and S&C informed me about the X-Ray result – that it’s fractured and quite badly so.
“Being part of a World Cup squad has always been a dream of mine. It’s still a bitter pill to swallow, to know that I would not be joining the team. I stayed off social media for about a week after the team had left. I think what makes it worse, is the fact that I was already on a tour with the team, and I was supposed to leave with them to New Zealand for the World Cup the day after the 4th ODI.”
Bosch is optimistic after her surgery: “The first couple of days after surgery was quite painful, but it is starting to feel better now. It’s just very frustrating and uncomfortable. Well for the first 2 weeks post-surgery, my hand has to be in a cast to immobilize the thumb. After that, I’ll hopefully be able to slowly start working on getting full range and strength back. It will be at least 6 weeks after the operation until I can get back to practice again.”
“As much as I missed out on the World Cup in New Zealand, I am now looking forward to getting back to training and to prepare for the next World Cup,” she concluded.
