Ethiopia’s Girmawit Gebrizihair Gebru triumphed to a course record, winning her first-ever half marathon elite women’s race at the Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday, 19 February 2022.
Gebru crossed the finish line in a time of 1:04:14 breaking Ababel Yeshaneh’s course record of 1:04:31 set in 2020.
Kenya’s Olympian, Hellen Obiri finished a mere 8 seconds behind the winner in a new Personal Best of 1:04:22, while her compatriot, Sheila Kiprotich secured the bronze in 1:04:36.
Speaking to members of the media soon after the race, Gebru was impressed with her performance.
“I am very proud of what I achieved today, especially as the competition was so fierce. I want to thank Ras Al Khaimah for inviting me to compete in such a fantastic race. I look forward to defending my title next year.”
