Ashleigh Simon, the 17-year old South Africa golf star, has won the Stroke Play Championship on twelve-under-par 204 today at George Golf Club.
She has won this trophy for the third time in her short career and she puts herself in line to make history again by going for the triple double when the Match Play championship starts on Wednesday.
Having shot one-under-par in the first round – Simon answered Kelli’s opening round with a seven-under-par 65, in the second round to ensure that she was in contention for the triple Stroke Play Trophy, this year.
Her four-under-par round today clinched the title again. Simon, who is does not want to go to college in the USA, just wants to play golf and will turn to both the Ladies European tour and the LPGA qualifying school and will see where this takes her at the end of the year.
Ashleigh went head to head with Kelli Shean, who shot a low round 68 on the first day of the tournament and followed that up with a round of 74 yesterday, went two-over-par again today, couldn’t convert some up and downs and saw putts lip and stay out.
Kelli Shean, who will be going to Arkansas College in the USA, can’t get past Simon’s wins this year, and has played bridesmaid to Ashleigh in the past few events.
The Stroke Play trophy has eluded her in previous years and she is going to have to work hard to get the Match Play trophy.
In third place is Sarah Faller of Galway Golf Club (having recently represented Ireland Under-18 team), who played very steady golf 220 (73,74,73).
Kim Williams, a 21 year old from Centurion lost it a bit over the closing holes and takes fourth place on 222, with excellent rounds of 71,73 78.
Young guns make noise in the silver division – 18 year old Lucy Lo from Milnerton GC wins the Silver Division on 247, while 13-year Lara Weinstein from Glendower Golf club, playing off a 10 handicap, came second on 258.
And representing Western Province was Kelly Erasmus, a 12-year old playing off a 16 handicap from Durbanville GC who finished joint-fourth, on 270.
