Proteas Women vice-captain, Chloe Tryon, insists her side will look to continue backing their process and stick to the basics ahead of their all-important second match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup South Africa 2023 against New Zealand in Paarl on Monday.
The Group A encounter gets underway at 19h00 (SAST) at Boland Park, with the action broadcast live on SuperSport Grandstand (Ch.201) and SuperSport Cricket (Ch. 212). Tickets are on sale at TicketPro from just R30.
In the opening game of the competition, South Africa fell to a three-run defeat to Sri Lanka in front of a raucous Newlands crowd in Cape Town, with the Proteas unsuccessfully chasing down the subcontinent’s first innings score of 129 / 4, which was inspired by a 50-ball 68 (12 fours) from captain Chamari Athapaththu.
Speaking ahead of the vital round-robin clash against New Zealand, Tryon addressed the team’s pitfalls in the first match, while also emphasizing the importance of looking forward as the team prepare for the challenge of the White Ferns.
“It’s obviously a difficult game to lose, (particularly) the way we did. As a group, we try not to look into that too much. We’ve been a quality side, playing really good cricket,” Tryon began.
“As a batting unit, that one innings doesn’t define us, so you had to kind of park it. It’s just (about) doing the basics. I just didn’t feel as a batting unit we did the right things; no partnerships and no one kind of putting up their hands. For us it’s just about making sure that we’re doing those basics right.
“Looking at other results, you want to see how the other teams are doing, but I think if we just play our brand of cricket and we keep ticking our boxes, we can come up with those wins.
“(It’s a) very important game against New Zealand coming up so we can’t take anyone lightly. It’s just important that we do the right things and let the result take care of itself,” the 29-year old added.
On a personal note, Tryon is preparing to play her 85th T20 international for South Africa, with the all- rounder in formidable form with the bat. Prior to her innings against Sri Lanka, Tryon recorded a maiden half-century in the T20 Tri-Series final against India in East London, before following that up with a dominant 65 off just 23 deliveries (5 fours, 7 sixes) in the first World Cup warm-up match against England in Stellenbosch.
Ahead of tomorrow’s contest in Paarl, Tryon explained how experience and her leadership role within the squad has benefitted her form with bat and ball.
“I’ve been working really hard. I’ve been here for like 12, 13 years, it’s quite long, but (I am) just understanding my role a lot more and being a senior player, (I have) been able to take responsibility a lot more, not just with batting, but with bowling and leadership in the team.
“I understand my role a lot more and I want to win many games with South Africa,” Tryon commented.
Following a record-breaking attendance for a stand-alone women’s T20 match in South Africa, Tryon also shared what it is like being the host nation during a senior Women’s T20 World Cup, this also on the back of the inaugural ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup which was also held in South Africa last month.
“It’s fantastic. You only get this once in your lifetime, so it’s really exciting. The atmosphere at Newlands was amazing; just looking around and seeing all the support for women’s cricket.
“We really want to grow the game and as you ‘ve seen in the last couple of years, it’s been growing from strength to strength and for South Africa it’s much needed, we just had an under 19 World Cup, which is great too.
“The growth and the depth you see in South Africa and women’s cricket is really good, so to have this year and hopefully take that win in the World Cup would be fantastic, but just putting women’s cricket on the map in South Africa is really exciting.
“It’s also good to play in front of family and friends and make everyone proud as well,” she added.
