CAF has announced the preliminary nominees for the various women’s categories for the CAF Awards 2023 to be celebrated in Marrakech, Morocco, on Tuesday 14 November 2023

South African senior women’s football team, Banyana Banyana, and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies players feature heavily on the list, and are found in every category.

South African soccer star Andile Dlamini, who was already named as Momentum Athlete of the Year at the gsport Awards, is among 30 players who will be up for the final selection for the Player of the Year gong.

Hilda Magaia, Jermaine Seoposenwe, Linda Motlhalo, Refiloe Jane and Thembi Kgatlana are also on the list.

Dlamini is joined by fellow Banyana teammate Kaylin Swart on the list for the best goalkeeper.

South Africa had a historic run at the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and Australia this year, where they became the first men’s or women’s team to reach the knockout round of the soccer showpiece.

Sundowns Ladies meanwhile. are vying for their place in the final of the CAF Women’s Champions League, they face AS Far in the semi-finals of the competition as they look to win their second title in two years.

Banyana Ba Style duo Refilwe Tholakele and Lebohang Ramalepe are on the list for the Interclub Player of the Year.

Thubelihle Shamase of the University of Johannesburg FC makes the list for the Young Player Award.

Now how can we mention an illustrious awards ceremony and not have Desiree Ellis in the conversation!? Ellis, unsurprisingly made it on to the list for Coach of the Year, she also won the Coach of the Year accolade at the gsport awards in 2023. And to top it off, Banyana has been included in the Team of Year list.

Sundowns Ladies coach Jerry Tshabalala is also nominated for Coach of the Year, again, this isn’t surprising given his teams dominance on the continent.

The Brazilians are also the only South African team to make the Club of the Year list.

The ceremony will take place on 11 December 2023 in Marrakech, Morocco.
