Banyana Banyana lost 4-1 to Australia in an international friendly played at Kingsmeadow Stadium in London on Saturday, 08 October 2022.
Both nations were playing this match as part of their preparations for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Five minutes into the encounter, Cortnee Vine put the Matildas ahead after a mistake in the nets by South Africa’s goalkeeper, Regirl Ngobeni
After 24 minutes, Vine added another goal to her tally after Thalea Smidt lost the ball in midfield. Australia made it 3-0 in the 41st minute when Clare Polkinghorne headed the ball into the back of the net.
In the 53rd minute, Australia’s Caitlin Foord beat Ngobeni from a tight angle to score the team’s fourth goal. Australia continued to dominate the game but failed to put more goals on the scoreboard. In the 86th minute, Hildah Magaia added a consolation goal as the match ended 4-1 in favour of the Matildas.
