As the rest of the province snuggles up to hide from the cold season, many excited and very talented young athletes pull up their socks, tighten their laces and pull on their kits for what has already kicked off as a thrilling second season of the JVW Girls School Soccer League.
Founded last year by current Banyana Banyana captain, Janine Van Wyk, the JVW Girls Schools League consisted of two categories, an Open and under-15 Girls League. As a result of the spirited effort and vigorous determination of not only Van Wyk but by the talented young participants, the league now boasts a remarkable 52 teams consisting of more than 960 incredibly talented footballers.
Despite the League only being in its second year, it has already seen success with JVW Stars player and 2012 JVW League Champion Neli Mchunu joining van Wyk and the rest of Banyana Banyana at the National Camp in Nelspruit.
Not only do teams have the opportunity to participate in a fun-filled, free and cultivating environment throughout the schools league, there is also room for individual growth for the highly talented in the JVW Stars Team.
The JVW Stars consist of gifted footballers who are selected from participating schools through trials hosted by van Wyk herself, but also have the opportunity to train with the Banyana Banyana defender throughout the year, where the experience and development gained is incomparable.
The League currently consists of two categories, namely the Private/Government Schools League as well as the 3-term Schools League, boasting a total of five pools of competitive schools football.
The 3-term Schools League, which kicked off in May, is already proving to be a success with the battle for top of the log presently held by St. Stithians Opens Team, closely being pursued by Veritas College, who are second, only 3 points separating the two.
The Government/Private schools league kicks off in July adding three more pools to the League in the Opens, U17 and U15 leagues.
Once the season has been completed, teams are invited to participate in a fun-filled competitive round robin tournament held at Modderfontein Sports Complex, where the teams compete for the top position and the renowned title of JVW Girls School League Champions, a sought-after title amongst competitors.
