Barnard Twins Lead SA Hopes at African Junior Champs in Tunisia

Tennis South Africa (TSA) named six girls in its Under 18 team to participate in the upcoming African Junior Championships, where teams from 25 countries will battle it out from 8-13 February, 2016 in Tunis, Tunisia.

The team members qualify based on their International Tennis Federation (ITF) rank combined junior world ranking, and the top five ranked girls and boys get to represent the country.

The team will depart South African on Thursday 28 January and participate in the Tunisia Junior ITF- Grade 2 tournament in Tunis as part of the preparation for the African Junior Championships.

South Africa boast top seeds in the twin Barnard sisters Lee and Zani, who will be seeded 2nd and 3rd.

Leon Freimond, TSA Manager of High Performance said that the team named were a strong competent side that would represent the country proudly. “We have a good team representing us in Tunisia this year!

“The tournaments are vitally important for the players,” continued Friemond, “As their performance at the Championships will help the respective players with their ITF world rankings and if the players impress, they may well be selected to join ITF junior touring teams”.

  5. Nadine de Villiers (GE)
