South African Under-20 Women’s National team coach Sheryl Botes has named a squad of 22 players for the second round of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier against Tanzania.
The first leg will be played on Saturday, 7 December at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Kick-off is at 16h00.
The South African U20 Women’s National squad (Basetsana) assembled for camp at the Garden Court, OR Tambo Hotel, on Sunday, 1 December, in preparation for the first leg encounter.
Basetsana will train at Edenvale Sports Grounds from Monday 2 December, to step up preparations for the Tanzania clash.
Boosted by an even stronger support staff, Basetsana will be looking to overcome Tanzania who progressed to the second round on a 15-1 aggregate win over Mozambique.
Basetsana advanced to the second round of the qualifiers on a 7-2 aggregate win against Botswana. Basetsana’s mentor said there will be no distractions to the preparations: “The girls have completed their exams; we can now focus on the mission ahead as we look to overcome Tanzania in this crucial World Cup assignment.
“Our focus this week will be on honing the attacking formations. We want to go to Tanzania and get a positive result but most important thing is not to concede. This will make our task in the second leg much easier,” said Botes.
Botes will travel with 20 players when they depart for Tanzania on Thursday, 5 December. “We are in the process of building a team, so we need to see what the players can give us, as the competition is going to get tougher as we progress.
“We will also be looking at rectifying mistakes that we made against Botswana in the first round. I will unfortunately be without the services of Drishana Pillay, who picked up an injury in the qualifier against Zambia, but I will have three players who played in the final of the Sasol League National Championships.
“Coming from a competitive tournament, I think the girls will add value to our World Cup campaign,” said Botes.
