The men’s events of the third of R220 000 Billabong Junior Series got underway in excellent one to 1.6 metre (3-5 foot) waves at the Big Bay, Bloubergstrand on Thursday, with light variable winds producing conditions described as the best this year for the country’s top 20 year-old and younger surf stars.
While the event officials sheltered from the rain in the newly-revamped Blouberg lifesavers clubhouse, the crowds on the beach were treated to outstanding men’s surfing in the powerful overhead waves.
Friday’s action sees the U16’s and the Pro Junior girls start their quests for the coveted titles, with predictions of gale-force winds, buckets of rain and swell up to five metres (15 foot) on Saturday.
Tarryn Chudleigh is on a hot streak at the moment, having won the Pro Junior Girls events at the first two Billabong Junior Series events in emphatic style, and will look to take this one away too.
Her biggest competitors include Pro Junior second-seeded Chantelle Rautenbach, followed by Sarah Baum and Heidi Palmboom, a sure bet for the future.
The finals are schedule for Sunday, when the surf is expected to reach a massive seven metres (22 foot), and the organisers are considering alternative venues on the Cape Peninsula, should conditions become unsuitable.
The four-day event features a total of 160 entries from every coastal centre, and offers a total of over R30 000 in prize-money to the surf series top performers.
The Billabong Junior Series is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA), the national controlling body for the sport in this country, and proudly supported by First National Bank, Palmers, Kustom, Von Zipper, Red Bull and Silver Bullet Productions.
