Competitors battling it out in the SPAR National Netball Championships are struggling to reign in a rampant Boland, looking set to take away the cup from last year’s winning Gauteng Central side.
Boland tops the log well into day four at the champs under way at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in the Friendly City.
Contenders for the finals include Free State, Gauteng North, but Boland is leading the pack from the front.
Des Kotze, captain of Gauteng North was upbeat, however, confident that their strong defence combining with youth in attack will win vital games against North West South and Eastern Gauteng on Friday.
“I’ve been playing defence with Candice Attree for 10 years, and with Rozanne Naidoo we make up a solid defence,” said Kotze. “
“Up front we have new blood in Annelle Besselaar and Erin Burger, and two wins tomorrow will see us in the finals.”
Away from the boardroom dramas surrounding coach and management issues in netball, the standard of play was the exciting aspect of the championship.
With the possibility of places in the national squad opening up, outstanding individual performances may impress the national selectors.
“An announcement on Friday will confirm whether there are any additions to the existing national squad,” one informed source confirmed.
