During the weekend the domestic Women’s One Day Challenge resumed, with Boland hosting Griqualand West on Sunday, and winning by a healthy margin of 126 runs.
The visitors won the toss and elected to field, and the tactic looked the right option at Boland Park in Paarl, with three early wickets inside the first 10 overs.
Geyer struck for Griqualand in her first over, pinning Terblanche lbw with the score 1/1, her opening bowler partner Mompati accounting for the remaining opener Loubser in the fourth over, with the total at 17/2.
Petersen was next to depart, having added 10 runs in 23 balls to the then-meager total of 33/3.
But Petersen’s wicket brought about a consolidation, as the next partnership of 74 runs off 116 deliveries between Potgieter and Brown, featuring six boundaries stabilised Boland’s innings.
Brown eventually departed run-out (Geyer/Harmse) for 28, and Cartledge (bowled Riffles for 2) didn’t make much impression.
This brought in Jacobs, who didn’t hang about in a quick-fire partnership of 88 runs in 101 balls, before Potgieter’s wicket was claimed lbw by Geyer.
Langhout will be disappointed with her first-ball duck, but Jacobs and Mackier finished off the last 6 overs of their innings at a run-a-ball, before Jacobs lost her wicket (run-out) with one delivery remaining.
Mackier was joined by Christiaans at the non-striker’s end, and duly sent the final ball to the boundary, giving Boland a competitive total of 247/8 for their bowlers to work with.
Griqualand will be troubled by the 55 extras accumulating in wides.
In their batting innings, Griqualand West started in solid but measured form, with an opening partnership of 42 between Bezuidenhout and Kruger.
But Boland’s Loubser exploited pressure from Griqualand’s slow runs accumulation, who took both opening batswomen with the score on 67/2.
Third batswoman in Harmse also got a good start, but couldn’t find a partner to stay with her at the crease.
When her wicket fell, with a total of 90 runs for three in the 37th over, Boland struck repeatedly, until Griqualand eventually finished their allotted overs for a total of 121 for seven wickets.
With their first 50 runs coming in the 22nd over, and Griqualand’s 100th run in the 41st over, they will have returned home in the knowledge that runs will have to be achieved at a much better rate, to stay in the game.
Geyer was Griqualand West’s best bowler, her 10 overs costing 43 runs for three wickets.
Boland’s bowlers will be pleased at very economical figures, topped by Loubser and Christiaans each taking two wickets in 10 overs, for a price of 17 and 31 runs respectively.
