Bridget Theunissen wrapped up the women’s Big 6 title with a fourth race victory at the 2023 HI-TEC Walker Bay Outdoor, on Monday, 1 May.
The young triathlete from KwaZulu-Natal put an exclamation point on her weekend by dominating her favourite discipline and winning the Sprint Distance Triathlon ahead of Tracey Campbell and Jana van den Berg.
Over the course of the HI-TEC Walker Bay Outdoor Theunissen notched up victories in the LedLenser Twilight Run, the Short Distance Mountain Bike race, the 2.5 kilometre Open Ocean Swim and the triathlon. She only conceded points on the Trail Run and the scrapping of the See en Sand swim run jump, which was stopped due to dangerous ocean conditions, would have further aided her charge to the crown.
The Sprint Distance Triathlon suited her skills perfectly, despite taking on the course on a road rather than a time trial bike. Theunissen exited the water in fifth position overall, just behind the quartet setting the pace in the men’s race and then built a handy lead on the bike. The confusion of riders who had turned short entering transition two ahead of her did not put Theunissen off her pace and she ran home strong to win the race in 1 hour, 15 minutes and 9 seconds. Campbell was the second woman across the line, 7 minutes and 14 seconds later, to seal second in the Big 6 too. Jana van den Berg completed the podium places in the triathlon, while Liza Kingston joined Theunissen and Campbell on the Big 6 podium.
Big 6 Final Standings:
1.Bridget Theunissen (493.39 Points)
2.Tracey Campbell (453.86 Points)
3.Liza Kingston (437.81 Points)
