The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) has announced that Morocco will host the 2024 edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League Finals, and following that announcement, the draw for the upcoming battle of women’s club football across the continent was also conducted at the Complex Mohammed VI in Sale, Morocco.
Six Zonal tournaments took place to qualify six teams in addition to the host, AS FAR of Morocco, and the holder of 2023 title of CAF WCL, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, for a total of eight teams in the fight to be crowned champions of Africa’s most prized club title.
The draw, which was conducted by former Morocco and AS FAR player, as well as U23 Morocco Women’s National Team Assistant Coach, Fatiha Laasiri, saw the qualified clubs divided into the two groups of four where they will all be aiming at a top two finish to advance to the knockout stages.
UWC FC have been dealt a tough draw with tournament hosts and 2022 winners, AS FAR headline Group A along with the tournament’s two debutants in Senegal’s Aigles De La Medina and South Africa’s University of the Western Cape, and while TP Mazembe makes a return to the tournament after missing out on the last edition, to make up the fourth club in Group A.
Mamelodi Sundowns are the current holders – having won the competition twice in three years (2021 and 2023), and Banyana Ba Style must first overcome a tricky Group B consisting of three highly determined debutants in Tutankhamun of Egypt, Ethiopia’s CBE FC as well as the Edu Queens of Nigeria.
The CAF Women’s Champions League Morocco 2024 will be played between 9 and 23 November 2024, and winners will earn USD400,000 (a little over R7million) in prize money with runners-up walking away with USD250,000 (around R4.4million).
Since its inception, the CAF Women’s Champions League played a key role in shaping women’s football in Africa, and Morocco hosted the 2022 edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Their hosting of the CAF Women’s Champions League follows the nation’s successful hosting of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2022, which also enjoyed unparalleled success.
