Book clubs – mostly made up of women – are very popular in South Africa, and some of them take their books very seriously, with members giving a talk on the books read, while others are more concerned about the lavish teas that are served with an element of fun and friendship.
The SPAR Women’s 10 km Challenge, to be run at Tuks Sportsgrounds on August 25 is also about fun and friendship, so why not get your book club friends to put away their reading glasses for a day, and take part in this year’s Challenge?
Walkers are welcome to take part in the Challenge, and 10kms on a relatively flat course is not too far for anyone moderately fit, but there is also the 5km Fun Run.
Just think of the fun you will have, walking or running with your friends and discussing the latest Penny Vincenzi or Richard North Patterson, or comparing notes about “Q & A” and other best- sellers. You might even meet members of other book clubs and find out what books they have been enjoying.
It’s also in a very good cause – proceeds from the race will go to The Chrysalis Foundation, a Pretoria-based Charity that aims to help abused girls between the ages of 14 and 18 who have been physically and emotionally traumatised.
There are also great prizes on offer, including a lucky draw for a voucher for a year’s supply of groceries worth R12 000.
So get your book club friends together and join in the fun at the SPAR Women’s 10km and 5km Challenge on Saturday August 25. There will be great entertainment with Shaun Tait and Sewende Laan cast members, so your whole family can enjoy the day!
Entry forms are available at all SPAR, SUPERSPAR and KWIKSPAR stores or you can enter online at the SPAR website.
