The new-look Investec South Africa women’s hockey team drew 2-2 with India in a practice match in Dublin, Ireland Tuesday night after leading 2-0 at half-time through goals from Shelley Russell and Tanya Britz.
SA face Australia Wednesday night and Scotland Thursday lunchtime ahead of the Champions Challenge tournament that takes place in Dublin from Saturday to next Sunday, October 7.
“It was a new experience for the young girls, but they did very well if you consider it was their first time playing together,” said SA assistant coach Fabian Gregory Wednesday afternoon.
“We have six new players here, and four of them, the strikers Izelle Lategan, Quanita Bobbs, Tanya Brits and Lillian du Plessis, were used against India. They can all be really proud of themselves, because the team did very well going forward.”
“This is a critical phase for us, because we are looking to broaden our player base. These players showed us that we made the right choice bringing them in,” said Gregory.
If you consider that we only had 13 players to pick from and were without stalwarts like Tarryn Bright, Kelly Madsen and Lenise Marais, and played against India who had a full squad of 18 to select from, we did really well.”
