– It was a day largely belonging to the batters as six players recorded half-centuries, with only three strikers of the ball leading their sidesto victory in a fascinating fifth week of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Women’s Provincial One-Day Cup on Saturday, 29 October 2022.
Faye Tunnicliffe (57 off 56 balls; 8 fours) continued her outstanding form with the willow to record a maiden fifty of the 50-over season to help inspire Six Gun Grill Western Province to a fourth win of the competition, maintaining their hundred percent record.
The Hollywoodbets Dolphins’ Alexandra Candler (58 off 77 balls; 7 fours) played an integral role from the top of the order as the home side chased down the DP World Lions’ first innings score to earn their third triumph of the season after suffering a rained-out match last week.
Meanwhile, the Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers’ latest recruit Tazmin Brits (72* off 52 balls; 12 fours, 1 six) delivered a clinical performance against her old side, the North West Dragons, to contribute to her new team’s victory in their first home game since gaining promotion.
Special mention also goes to the Dragons’ Zintle Mali (50 off 61 balls; 7 fours), Fidelity Titans’ Sunette Viljoen-Louw (80 off 80 balls; 5 fours, 5 sixes) as well as KwaZulu-Natal Inland Tuskers’ Megan Wessells (56 off 107 balls; 8 fours).
In a hotly contested clash at the Six Gun Grill Newlands Stadium, title contenders, Western Province proved their winning mettle once again when they successfully chased down the Titans’ Viljoen-Louwinspired total of 218 all out in 48 overs, with Nosipho Vezi picking up figures of 3 / 42.
With the bat, Province made a solid start through Babette de Ledde (33) and Tunnicliffe, with the latter going onto record a quicker than a run-a-ball fifty to accelerate proceedings before captain Leah Jones (25*) and wicket-keeper batter Kalsey Adams (31*) calmly wrapped up the match with three wickets to spare.
In Durban, the hosts won the toss and elected to bowl first, sending the Lions into bat. That decision paid off for the Dolphins as Jade de Figueiredo tore through the Lions top-order with a return of 4 / 19 to help dismiss the visitors for 158 despite valiant knocks from Palesa Mapoo (39) and Karabo Meso (31).
In their reply, the Dolphins had Candler’s half-century to thank as she set the tone as the opening batter before crucial middle-order contributions from skipper Nondumiso Shangase (30) and Asamkele Kawu (24) propelled the home side past the required total with 11 overs remaining.
In the third Top 6 encounter, a lethal combination of seam and spin with a dose of destructive batting formed part of the winning formula for the Garden Route Badgers over the North West Dragons. The experienced pair of Micaéla Andrews (3 / 25) and Jané Winster (3 / 28) began the show with excellent bowling to help dispose of the Dragons for 124 all out within 35 overs, even with the assistance of Mali’s encouraging milestone with the bat.
In response, the Badgers were well-armed with Brits’ explosive batting that saw the tall, big hitter smash a six along with 12 fours on her way to an unbeaten knock to lead her team over the line with one wicket down in just 19.4 overs, well-supported by promising all-rounder Annerie Dercksen (42*).
In the second division, the most intriguing match took place at the Pietermaritzburg Oval where Limpopo showed their potential by eclipsing the Inland Tuskers by one wicket after chasing down the home side’s score of 174 / 6 that saw Wessells notch up a valuable knock. The side from the North then made the most of the unforced errors from the Tuskers, with their batters, led by Helen Rasebotsa’s 70-ball 45, capitalizing, and securing the monumental win with 6.5 overs left on the scoreboard. In the other matches in Pool A and Pool B, Free State were comfortable nine-wicket victors away to Kei at the Khaya Majola Oval, while Northern Cape Heat dispatched of Mpumalanga by eight wickets at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley.
