One of South Africa’s top female cyclists, Ashleigh Moolman, will miss the upcoming African Championships, after she crashed and broke her left collarbone on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old, Moolman, who races for the Toyota Supercycling professional team, crashed heavily when she took evasive action to avoid being hit by an oncoming a car that was overtaking a truck outside Stellenbosch.
“I was going down a hill and drinking from my bottle when I realised the car was heading straight for me. I went off the road and fell awkwardly,” explained a disappointed Moolman on Friday.
“I was so looking forward to representing South Africa for the first time at the African champs next week. The break was quite bad and I had to have a plate inserted. But I plan to be back on a stationary trainer within a week to ensure I maintain fitness.”
Moolman has been the biggest revelation in South African women’s cycling in 2009. She finished second in the road race at the national championships in March, won the gruelling 150km Jock Tour in July, claimed victory at last weekend’s Telkom Satellite Challenge and is currently lying third in the prestigious Alpha Pharm Seeding Series.
Moolman was due to compete in the road race at the African Championships in Namibia next week. She has been replaced in the team by fellow Toyota Supercycling teammate, Lizanne Naude.
