Eastern Province (EP) won both matches in the latest round of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Women’s Provincial League to top the West/East log.
Leg spin protégé, Dané van Niekerk (102*) showed her ever growing talent with the bat when she scored an unbeaten century in their first match against Boland to get her side to 253/6. In reply, Yolandi Potgieter and Yolandi van der Westhuizen scored 48 and 40 respectively but could not prevent the wickets that fell at regular intervals, giving EP a six-run victory.
Although EP’s second match saw fewer runs put on the board, they still scored a comfortable victory against a confident Western Province (WP) side, which had just come off beating Border by 163 runs in Cape Town.
EP batted first and posted 140/9 with Marizanne Kapp scoring an unbeaten 50 off 54 balls. Mosalene Daniels was the pick of the WP bowlers, taking 4/28 in nine overs with Yolandi Fourie taking two for 27.
Kapp topped up her notable batting performance with a brilliant show with the ball, taking four wickets for just two runs in her five-over spell. The match was affected by rain and the required score was dropped to 126 in 31 overs through the Duckworth/Lewis method but WP were still bowled out for 77 to give EP a 48-run victory.
Northerns beat Easterns when they met in Pretoria. Easterns scored 107/8 in their 50 overs when they were put in to bat first thanks to a handy 54 by B Chululee. In reply, L Malesa from Northerns fell one run short of her half-century and Suné Luus scored a helpful 28 not out for a seemingly easy victory.
In a nail biting match in Bloemfontein, Free State beat KwaZulu-Natal Inland by one wicket to top the Central log while, in Kimberley, Griqualand West suffered a seven-wicket home defeat at the hands of KwaZulu-Natal Coastal.
