Some 30 cyclists are pitting themselves against the elements – and an awe-inspiring 2100 km distance – to raise funds and awareness for the Reach For a Dream Foundation.
"Starting on 16 February, we’re cycling from Beitbridge (at the Zimbabwe border in Limpopo Province) to Cape Town, for the Reach For a Dream Foundation – stopping in some of the towns as we go, to raise funds," explains Alida de Beer, one of the cyclists, who is also co-ordinating the project.
The tour, organised by the P&L Hardware Cycling Club in association with The Reach For A Dream Foundation will see the cyclists covering an average distance of 100km a day for 21 days, passing through 20 towns and cities – and ending with the Pick n Pay Argus race on 9 March 2008.
"The event requires a tremendous effort from the cyclists, who not only prepare for months to have the stamina to complete the tour, but also seek out a minimum sponsorship of R1,00 per km – to raise R2,100 each in donations – just to participate in the event.
But what a fabulous motivation, knowing that their efforts are helping to fulfil the dreams of children with life-threatening diseases – so please come and encourage the cyclists as they pass through your town!" says Rosette Chetty, Funding Development Officer at The Reach For a Dream Foundation.
