The South African Indoor Women’s Hockey team managed to secure a narrow 4-3 win over Ireland in their third fixture in the Kathea Nkosi Cup at the Wynberg Military Base, in Cape Town, on Sunday, 17 December 2023.

The hosts found themselves a goal down as the Irish got the opener thanks to Sarah Patton with a good penalty corner variation.

But it wasn’t long before Edith Molikoe got South Africa back on level terms. Some individual brilliance and a direct run from her saw Molikoe level the match before the end of the first quarter.

She then scored her second goal of the game after a superb touch-on from Tegan Fourie, only to claim her hat-trick shortly before half time, from another incisive assist from Fourie, extending the hosts’ lead to 3-1 after 20 minutes.

But South Africa were about to be tested in the third quarter as Ireland came back roaring.

Chloe Brown was on the scoresheet within the opening minute, scoring from a brilliant penalty corner. Milla Fulton then netted her first international goal to see the visitors level the match 3-all, with seventeen minutes remaining in the match.

The home team went into the match knowing they needed a win to ensure their place in the final but, with the way the game was playing out, it looked like nothing could separate the two teams.

Molikoe then showed some big-match temperament in the final minute of the match to snatch the win for SA when she completed a faked move going around the Ireland goalkeeper to seal a resounding victory for South Africa.

AJ Spieringshoek’s team will take on Namibia at 18:45 on Monday evening, while Ireland will be up against Namibia in the first game of the day at 11h00.
