Russian-born tennis star, Elena Rybakina who now represents Kazakhstan, became the youngest player to win Wimbledon championship since Petra Kvitova in 2011.
The 23-year-old is also the first player representing Kazakhstan to win a major title. The no.17 seed came back from a set down to beat world no.2 Ons Jabeur in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
“I’m speechless, the crowd were unbelievable and I want to congratulate Ons, you are an inspiration. It was a joy to play against you,” said Rybakina.
“It’s an honour to play here in this unbelievable atmosphere. I didn’t expect to be in the second week. To be a winner is just amazing, I wouldn’t be here without my team of course, so I want to say a big thanks to them and most importantly my parents,” she concluded.
