The third edition of South Africa’s only women’s sport newsmakers event is just a few weeks away. Work is already well underway in the Momentum-powered gsport Newsroom in partnership with Telkom, to identify the 10 Newsmakers of the Year to be announced at the gsport Annual List 2021 (#GAL2021).

For the past two years, netball has dominated the gsport Annual List, claiming rights to the Newsmaker of the Year in 2019 and 2020, thanks to the Spar Proteas efforts at the 2019 Netball World Cup and South Africa securing the rights to host the Netball World Cup 2023.

The gsport Annual List was launched in 2019 to see how far women’s sport has come. That year, Netball South Africa President, Cecilia Molokwane, was named 2019 gsport Newsmaker of the Year. She led a stellar list that included Springbok rugby star, Babalwa Latsha, the Spar Proteas who finished 4th at the 2019 World Cup and Momentum for their corporate investment in women’s sport.

In 2020, international netball sensation, Karla Pretorius, was named gsport Newsmaker of the Year, for her continued success on the world stage, following her Player of the Tournament award at the World Cup the year before. The #GAL2020 list included global para sport sensation, Kgothatso Montjane, running sensation, Glenrose Xaba, and Olympian, Michaela Whitebooi, who continues to fly the flag for judo.

It is hard to predict who will walk away with top honours at #GAL2021 in a few weeks’ time. Judging by the history making and record-breaking stories being churned out by the gsport Newsroom, there is no shortage of names to choose from.

This #GAL2021 event is distinguished from the annual Momentum gsport Awards – which receives public nominations adjudicated by an independent judging panel; while the gsport Annual List is compiled in-house and is informed by leading events in the gsport newsroom through the year.

The Mail & Guardian will once again produce a commemorative supplement in December, featuring #GAL2021 winners, as we reflect on one of the best years for South African women’s sport.
