Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon opened her 2023 season in style, winning the 1500m event in a new world lead time at the Doha Diamond League on Friday, 4 May.
Kipyegon crossed the finish line in 3:58:57, ahead of Ethiopian duo Welteji Diribe in 3:59;34 and Hailu Freweyni in 4:00;29.
The world record currently stands at 3:50:07, set by Genzebe Dibaba. Kipyegon came close to breaking the record at the Monaco Diamond League in 2022, when she ran 3:50:37.
