Runner-up three times previously in 2003, 2004 and 2007, Sterne excelled in the absence of defending champion Tenille Swartz, and was completely focussed in her straight game win over Argyle.

Argyle put up a spirited fight in the first game but, thereafter had no answers to Sterne’s all-round attack. Also winners on the day were Milnay Louw who beat Siyole Lusaseni for third place, Cara Willoughby who took the Plate final from Christine Ferreira.

In the 35-44 division Angie Clifton-Parks kept up her winning ways over second-seed Sonia Pinter, and Vivienne Doeg beat Leora Greenwood for the bronze medal.
