Farrah Fenner lifted the ABSA Gauteng Open Squash Championships title at the weekend, after second-seeded Diana Argyle took her to a five-set duel for victory.
The women’s final was described as a slow-moving affair, which saw Argyle squander a number of chances against top-seeded Farrah Fenner.
Fenner dropped only 1 point to win the first game 9-1, but Argyle responded strongly to square the game up, after taking the second game 9-3.
Argyle was unable to convert the a first opportunity to win the third game, when she lead 8-6, but eventually clinched the game 10-8 to hold a 2-1 lead.
Points seesawed to 4-all in the fourth game, until a series of unforced errors allowed Fenner to notch it 9-4, to level the match at two games each.
Superior volleys gave Fenner the edge in the decider which she won 9-4.
In the 35-44 age-group division, Sonia Pinter forced a comfortable three-game match over Sharon le Roux, while Pauline Douglas came from a game down to win 3/1 over Maryna Aucamp in the 45+ division.
