Athletics South Africa (ASA) has announced that Durban will brace itself this weekend for the coming storm, as some 155 top athletes from around the country gather for the Nedbank SA Half Marathon Championships on Sunday 1 July.
A first prize of R25 000 is at stake, plus a shot at being included in the team to go to the World Road Running Championships in Udinese, Italy in October.
With all the big names lining up, Rene Kalmer, Bulelwa Mtshagi and Xintle Ziniwe to name but a few, the race promises to be a fierce one. But there is a race within a race, as not only individual honours are at stake, but also provincial team pride.
The women’s race is expected to be dominated by Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) and Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA). Lining up for CGA are Dimokatso Morobi, Caroline Koll, Eunice Nhlapho and a resurgent Irvette van Blerk.
A team effort between them could amount to a major challenge for the Provincial Team prize. It will require racing as a unit rather than individuals and the team from AGN could well put a spanner in the works.
It will be Gloria Baeba that AGN will be looking to do the major damage in the women’s race, both as an individual in the individual and team category.
Baeba finished second at this year’s Nedbank Johannesburg City Marathon and if she finds form on the day, her team made up of Charne Bosman (formerly Rademeyer), Rene Van Zyl and Catherine Nkosi could well give the women from CGA a good run for their money.
