FIFA have confirmed plans to introduce the first ever Women’s Club World Cup at the organisation’s council meeting on Friday, 16 December.

In 2019, President Gianni Infantino had stated that the proposed idea would begin as soon as possible.

The footballing mother body is looking to influence the game globally for women that is set to happen in a not so distant future.

Alongside the introduction of a Women’s Club World Cup, a new FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup was announced as FIFA’s endorsement to expand the number of nations entering into the Olympic Games from 12 women’s football teams to 16.

With no detailed structure on what the competition will look like, it could include teams from the USA’s National Women’s Soccer League competing against European and WSL teams for the first time, but the current international match calendar for women’s football would remain unchanged until 2025.
