South African swimmer Rebecca Meder continued to break records at the World Short Course Championships in Melbourne, Australia on Friday, 16 December 2022.
The 20-year-old finished sixth in the 100m individual medley with a time of 58.46, faster than the time she set in her heats and semi-finals on Thursday.
The race was won by Marrit Steenbergen in a time of 57.53, followed by Beryl Gastalella from France (57.63) and Louise Hanson in third (57.68).
“I was actually a bit more nervous for the semi than I was for the final. I just wanted to see what I could do against those top girls. There was nothing to lose and everything to gain. It was another half a second PB from my PB last night,” said Meder.
She added: “It was a massive swim for me and to be sixth in the world is incredible.”
Elsewhere, Caitlin de Lange did well in her race to reach the 50m individual freestyle semi-final finishing eight with a time of 24.53 at her first World Short Course Championships. Meanwhile Stephanie Houtman finished 13th in the 1500m freestyle with a time of 16:35.22
Meder also competed in the women’s 200m breaststroke where she finished 19th in a time of 2:23.64.
