Lauren Billson improved her second spot in the Dis-Chem 1km Ocean Swim at Round 2 with a victory over Jamie-Lee Engelke and Rohini Pillay as near-gale force off-shore winds for Round 3 of the Nelson Mandela Bay Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series still saw over 250 participants taking part in the Ocean Swim and Beach Run/walk events.
It wasn’t easy for the swimmers in the blustery conditions and water safety was boosted with lifesavers from the Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club and Metro Services in attendance.
The going was extremely tough in the Dis-Chem 3km Ocean Swim with slow times all round, but Rebecca Newman completed the ladies race with a win from Chrislie Niehaus and Sanmari Woithe.
On the Beach is was fun and excitement for the 12-and-unders in the Kids 1km Beach Run, with Jenna Parry dominating the girls race from Sarah Morgan and Jade Voigt while, in the longer 5km Beach Run, it was Series leader Ursula Kuhn who won her category, followed home by Estee Stanley and Kirstie Engelke. The 5km Beach walk was won by Yolandi Wright.
14 year-old Stephani le Roux won the R1,500 cash Zports Series Members lucky draw jackpot up for grabs every race day, and in the Kids 1km Beach Run Sarah Morgan won the R100 cash jackpot from Crowhurst and Bond Optometrists.
“It wasn’t an easy day at all this morning with blustery conditions which kept a lot of the participants away, but full credit to the hundreds that did brave the conditions Sunday’s Round 2 down at Hobie Beach was fantastic as it’s great to see so many families coming down and being active”, said race organiser Mike Zoetmulder of Zports.
“With over 500 participants taking part, the greatest growth is coming from the youngsters who are not only taking part in the kids 1km beach run, but also venturing into the 1km swim or 5km beach run events.”
Full results from round 3 are available on the Series website, with Round 4 taking place in two weeks time on Sunday 19th December at Hobie Beach.
