The second day of the SAFA Regional Women’s League U-19 Championships rained goals with the Eastern Cape the biggest winners as they beat Northern Cape 8-2 in the battle of the Capes at the Loubser Park Stadium in Kroonstad, Free State on Saturday, 10 August.

Photo: SAFAThe Eastern Cape made their intentions clear from the first whistle when Anelisa Ndyebi and Mihle Mngeni scored two early goals in the opening minutes of the first half. But Northern Cape appeared unfazed by this early setback as Abigail August reduced the deficit with a well-timed shot to give her side their first goal of the tournament.

The momentum appeared to carry Northern Cape through as they soon found the equaliser through Relebogile Mosetlhane moments after their first.

The Eastern Cape threw everything at their opponents and eventually reclaimed their lead shortly before the break.

Eastern Cape retuned from the break fired up and continued their dominance as they overwhelmed their opponents with one attack after another. Shots came flying thick and fast with the Northern Cape goalminder unable to cope.

Anelisa Ndyebi was instrumental in creating and scoring the five goals that saw the Eastern Cape seal a comfortable 8-2 victory.

Meanwhile, coastal province KwaZulu Natal gave Free State a 5-1 beating to take firm control of Group A in a match that was played later in the day.

KwaZulu Natal cruised past the hosts to score two goals in the opening minutes of the game. The girls from the coast were intent on emulating the Eastern Cape and made it 3-0 before the break.

KZN came back from the break in search of their fourth but the Free State defence held sway. But KwaZulu Natal proved to be the stronger of the two after a scuffle in the box that threw the Free State goalminder off to give KwaZulu Natal a 4-0 lead.

Free State managed to sneak in a consolation goal, their first of the tournament, to put some respectability to the score line.

The game intensified with both teams in search of goals and KwaZulu Natal made the most out of play to score their fifth goal minutes from the full-time whistle. A brave fight from Free State but it ended 5-1 in favour of KZN.
