The 2007 Campus2Campus SuperClassic has a brand new sponsor – the medical aid suppliers BESTmed. And those taking part in the September 30 event will welcome some other changes that have been made since last year’s inaugural race.
With BESTmed as title sponsors, the event is now known as the BESTmed Campus2Campus SuperClassic.
Other sponsors who have significantly bulked up their contribution on the day are Medi-Clinic, the official medical back-up suppliers to events such as the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour.
Race organizer, Mauritz Meyer, says the Medi-Clinic people are going to put up a display of the same magnitude at the Campus2Campus.
"We’re very excited about the second edition of the event," said Meyer. "We have made various changes to ensure that every participant will have a great experience on the day."
The main change concerns the start. The race started in Potchefstroom and finished in Vanderbijlpark last year. This time it will start AND finish at the North West University’s picturesque Vaal Triangle campus on the banks of the Vaal River in Vanderbijlpark.
This means riders do not have to go through the logistics of a point-to-point race again. Last year things were even more difficult because the Aardklop Festival was held at Potchefstroom over the same weekend.
The Vanderbijlpark campus is also the venue for the Fast One, which attracts 10 000 cyclists every year, so there can be no doubt about the university’s ability to accommodate a large cycling crowd and a fantastic finish.
Another big change is the scrapping of the 145km event. Licensed participants will race over 106 km, which is also the long distance for fun riders. It includes the famous Ertjiesberg, hence the name – the Ertjies Bezuidenhout route.
For the dawn dodgers the best news is that the race will start a little later, at 07:00, this year. This has been done to accommodate cyclists who travel to Vanderbijlpark on the morning of the event.
The SuperClassic offers one of the biggest prize purses in SA cycling. A total of R70 000 is up for grabs, which should ensure that all local professional teams will make a not of the date.
Coupled with strong medical, marshalling and refreshment back-up as well as safe and secure parking at the Vaal Triangle campus, the Campus2Campus SuperClassic is an event not to be missed.
