The South African Women’s Hockey Team welcome the return of Giles Bonnet as head coach as he hopes to assist the national side climb the world rankings.
Bonnet previously held the role between 2010-2014 where he led the team into the top 10, as well as to a competitive adventure at the London Olympic Games.
One of the highlights of his time with the team was at the London Olympics Qualifying tournament where the South Africans triumphed over India in New Delhi, with goals from Shelley Jones, Pietie Coetzee-Turner and Marsha Cox.
Bonnet is a household name in the game of hockey having served international roles for Belgian Men, SA Hockey Men, China’s men’s and women’s teams, as well as the Canadian national women’s side.
CEO of SA Hockey Marissa Langeni shared her excitement on Bonnet’s appointment: “Giles is no stranger to SA Hockey. He oversaw a period of great success and growth for the SA Women’s Team. His commitment to the program and the growth under his tutelage was fantastic to see. We look forward to seeing the team take further steps under his guidance in a remarkably busy hockey calendar!”
Bonnet is eagerly looking forward to the challenge that awaits him: “South Africa are currently sitting at number 16 on the world rankings, I believe we as a country have far more potential than that. For me it’s an exciting opportunity. I also believe with the quality of hockey on television these days, we have a major attraction for sponsors who want to help us reach the next level. It may be challenging in the short-term, but we will assist these young players to achieve their potential in the green and gold”, Bonnet concluded.
Bonnet will hit the ground running as the team prepares for the Commonwealth Games, FIH Hockey World Cup and FIH Nations Cup in the next 6 months.
