The country’s top female surf stars are heading for Tableview in Cape Town this weekend, for the third of four stops on the R110 000 Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Summer Surf Series.
The series of all-girls surf festivals celebrating the surfing lifestyle features contests for Open, Pro Junior (U20), U15 and Novices divisions along with free learn to surf and Yoga lessons, a painting competition and heaps of promotions and give-aways in a laid back and fun atmosphere that enables girls of all ages and abilities to meet and mingle on the beach.
After stops in Margate and Jeffreys Bay during December, SA’s ‘Queen of Surfing’, Heather Clark from Port Shepstone, heads the series ratings in the premier 3A rated Open division.
Clark, who won in her home waters and finished runner-up in Jeffreys Bay, is closely followed by J-Bay winner Stacey Guy, from Melkbosstrand, and Kommetjie’s Tarryn Chudleigh.
Having just returned from Australia where she represented the country in the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships, Chudleigh is in top form and will also be looking to cement her lead in the Pro Junior (U20) division.
Fellow national team member Chantelle Rautenbach from nearby Melkbos and the trio of super talented 14 year-olds in Sarah Baum, Bianca Buitendag and Heidi Palmboom are likely to be her toughest challengers.
The Kommetjie pair of Holly Armstrong and Tanika Hoffman are locked in a duel for supremacy in the U15 division, where they have finished first and second respectively in the first two events, while the Novices division showcases new talent amongst the girls 18 and under who have not previously won an event.
The Girls Get Out There event provides the ideal opportunity for girls of all ages to try their hand at surfing in the free ‘Learn to Surf’ sessions, conducted by SSA qualified instructor Liam Wood with all the necessary equipment, including beginners surfboards, leashes and a range of wetsuits.
There are also the daily Soft Lips Yoga sessions that enable all present to participate and learn the basics of this highly beneficial form of exercise, stretching and breathing.
While the surfing contests display the country’s top talent and the music pumps there are continuous promotions and give-aways hosted by TV personality Marius Roberts and the promo teams from Seventeen Magazine, Tropitone and Girls Inc.
The Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Summer Surf Series is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA) and proudly supported by Soft Lips, FNB, Von Zipper, Kustom, Tropitone and Seventeen Magazine. Lifestyle and action coverage of the events will appear in the Seventeen Magazine publication, on the magazine’s website and on SuperSport in television documentaries produced by Silver Bullet Productions.
