2022 Momentum gsport Awards Imperial African Woman in Sport winner Akhona Makalima has been selected as one of the officials for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, as announced on Monday 9 January 2023.
Makalima, who was also crowned Style Star winner at #gsport16, was part of the 2022 WAFCON tournament and has now been appointed as one of 33 referees that are set to officiate at the global event.
Morocco’s Bouchra Karboubi, Rwanda’s history maker Salima Mukansanga and Togo’s Vincentia Amedome join Makalima as the other three African referees.
Four African center referees have been selected to officiate at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia & New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.

The FIFA official’s team consists of 33 referees, 55 assistant referees and 19 video match officials. In the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, this will be the first time that six female VMOs have also been selected.
The 9th edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup will be held in Australia and New Zealand from 20 July to 20 August 2023.
