Two former Momentum gsport Award winners, Hloni Mthimkulu and Phumelela Hlophe, have been appointed to the esteemed judging panel for the 2024 Momentum gsport Awards, being conducted in at the Wanderers Club in Illovo, Johannesburg, on Friday, 16 August, 2024.
Mthimkulu, an award-winning journalist and the Woman in Television winner in 2019, has also been recognised as the Sports Journalist of the Year, at the SA Sport Awards in 2022.
Hlophe, a former South African women’s hockey goalkeeper and 2021 Ministerial Recognition of Excellence award, also joined the panel as a former winner gsport stage with a strong passion for promoting the interests of girls and women in sport.
This dynamic duo joins a distinguished panel of former Momentum gsport Award winners, including 2015 Special Recognition award winner Cynthia Tshaka, 2013 Athlete of the Year Mapaseka Makhanya, 2015 Ministerial Recognition of Excellence recipient, Geraldine Pillay-Viret, 2012 London Olympics bronze medalist Bridgitte Hartley, and Siphesihle Mtshali, a Director from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
Speaking about her inclusion on the panel, Mthimkulu said: “I am very happy to be on the judging panel, it’s so nice to be on the other side the time having gone through that experience and knowing what it means of all the winners and those who have been nominated.”
Hlophe was equally enthusiastic, saying: “Being on the judging panel is very exciting, very different … It’s really nice to see what happens in the background as an athlete,” said Hlophe, “All you really know is you might be fortunate enough to get invited to the Momentum gsport Awards, and you are celebrated!
“It’s nice to be in these rooms with these incredible women that are putting the light on the amazing athletes that we have in South Africa. I feel really honoured and privileged to be here,” concluded Hlophe.
Finalists for the 2024 Momentum gsport Awards will be announced on Thursday, 22 August 2024, when public voting opens to help determine the overall winners.
The 2024 Momentum gsport Awards take place in Johannesburg on Thursday, 12 September 2024.
