An esteemed judging panel has been appointed to drive the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards process to select the top three finalists in each Public Voting Awards category at the 17th edition of Africa’s leading women’s sport awards.

One of South Africa’s most celebrated athletes and former gsport Special Recognition Award winner, Natalie du Toit joins this year’s panel alongside Sports Administrator at the University of the Free State, Kesa Molotsane, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Co-ordinator, Siphesihle Mtshali and gsport Hall of Fame inductee, Hazel Gumede.

The experienced quartert will work alongside current panel members, renowned sports broadcaster and former gsport Special Recognition award winner, Cynthia Tshaka, former SA women’s hockey captain and former gsport Special Recognition winner, Marsha Cox, as well as South African National Editors Forum Representative, Mary Papayya.

“It is an absolute pleasure to be invited on to the judging panel,” revealed Molotsane.

“This is a great opportunity to show the diversity of sports to the world. As diverse as it is; it ultimately brings people together and to identify as a unit. It is impressive to see how women unite to celebrate each other’s contributions; talents and achievements in sports,” she added.

“There wouldn’t have been a better way to do so if gsport4girls wasn’t on our side. I feel privileged and excited to be a part of such a historic journey. I am really proud of what South African women in sport have achieved and conquered – I’m also excited that all of this is happening in the month where women are celebrated. Mine is just to celebrate & promote women in sport. I’m wishing each and every nominee the best of luck. Win or lose; they have all outdone themselves; they have conquered, and most importantly, they have left a historic mark.”

Mtshali echoes Molotsane’s sentiments, saying: “I’m absolutely excited and humbled to be chosen to recognise women as a judge for the Momentum gsport Awards. All women in sport are deserving to be recognized for their greatness! And, thank you to gsport for opening the circle.”

Tshaka, who makes her return on the panel for the second consecutive year, looks forward to the excitement that will be showcased at #gsport17 after what has been an outstanding year for women in sport.

“I’m looking forward to being a judge again for the Momentum gsport Awards. This year is going to be very exciting, especially with Banyana Banyana being crowned African Champions – it will motivate a lot of women in sport to keep trying and to never give up on their dreams and goals.

“I will definitely be looking forward to seeing the excellence as well as the never-give-up spirit and the will to achieve ones goals and dreams, no matter what circumstances one is facing. So, I can’t wait to be part of it all again.”

Speaking on the continuous growth of the Momentum gsport Awards platform, Papayya says: “It’s always a pleasure to be back as a member of this prestigious judging panel. Every year we see the huge impact these awards have on encouraging more women and girls to be part of the codes of sports highlighted in the various categories.

“Every year the entries continue to grow. This trajectory of growth helps flatten the curve on gender disparity to promote inclusion and equity in sport. It is a good news story and with positive impact.”
