Johannesburg have been crowned the 2022 Spar National Netball Champions in a nail-biter of a final against Tshwane that took place on Saturday, 13 August at North West University in Potchefstroom, making it their maiden title.
Tshwane had a clean sheet of wins coming into the final round and were hoping to be the unbeaten champions, but it was not to be. Johannesburg had lost to Tshwane in the round-robin stages of the tournament, but came out firing for a win and win they did.
In what was a closely contested match from start to end, it left one on the edge of their seats as both teams tried to pull away and gain the advantage. Tshwane drew level in the second quarter but Johannesburg fought back to go ahead at halftime 14-10.
Tshwane won the third quarter but Johannesburg was still one point ahead. It went neck and neck to the final whistle but it was Johannesburg that would lift the title, winning 24-23. As much as it was a low-scoring game it showed the defense of both teams was not going down without a fight.
In the U21 Final that also took place on Saturday morning, Tshwane defeated host Dr Kenneth Kaunda.
