Springbok Women’s Sevens thumped Chile 29-10 to finish ninth overall at the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in Santiago on Sunday, 14 August 2022.

The South Africans succeeded in completing the double over the Chileans whom they also defeated on the opening day of the event. Paul Delport’s team will return home with three wins and two defeats in their five matches.

Chile was all out to settle the score with the South Africans and made a strong start. Felicia Jacobs however had other ideas when she opened the scoring for South Africa. The hosts replied decisively and it was tight first half with a score on 10-7.

SA women stepped into gear in the second half with their lively attacking play that outgunned the home side and saw South Africa obtain four more tries. Zanele Masuku scored two of those tries, with Marlize du Bruin and Donelle Synders also getting onto the scoresheet for a well-fought 29-10 victory over the hosts in their last match of the tournament.

South Africa also defeated Papua New Guinea in the early parts of Sunday, in their playoff match. The team will now return home on a positive note to complete their preparation for the Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament taking place in Cape Town.
