Gauteng North’s Carrie Park claimed her first victory of the season when she lifted the Nomads Junior Gauteng Championship title at Randpark in Gauteng on Sunday.
The 16-year-old Irene Country Club golfer opened with a two-under-par 70 and navigated Bushwillow course in 74 strokes in the final round to hold off a charge from local favourite, Kaleigh Telfer.
Park claimed the title on even-par 144, finishing three shots clear of Telfer from Bryanston.
The Gauteng North golfer was delighted to break into the winner’s circle. “I’ve had a good season overall, including a second- and three third-place finishes, but I just haven’t been able to break through for a win,” said Park.
“It is great to finally lift a trophy because it puts the seal on all the hard work I’ve been putting in this season.”
Telfer, who opened with a disappointing 75, closed the gap on the pacesetter with a second round 72 to finish alone in second.
Fellow Bryanston Country Club golfer, Natasha Carlsson, and Ivanna Samu from Roodepoort Golf Club carded matching rounds of 76 and 75 to tie for third on seven over 151.
Meanwhile Mercedes Kreissel from Blue Valley Golf Estate carded rounds of 84 and 88 to win the B-Division on 28-over-par 128. Kreissel finished three shots clear of Cara Ford and six ahead of Kayiyuree Moodley.
