Pakistan continued their upbeat progress in their ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier campaign with a stunning 9-wicket win over Zimbabwe, which follows their comprehensive victory over Ireland on Monday, when an inspired bowling performance reduced Zimbabwe to 58 all out, with star of the day being captain Urooj Mumtaz.
Zimbabwe had easily defeated Scotland in their opening game on Monday, but the African team had no answer to the inspired bowling of Pakistan in their second encounter, as skipper Mumtaz bowled fantastically to take her second international hat-trick, well supported by an inventive and well-balanced bowling attack.
Sana Mir, who won the Player of the Award yesterday in Pakistan’s 57-run defeat of Ireland, was also outstanding in her spell of 3-7, and it only took 13 overs to knock off the winning runs, with opener Bismah Maroof unbeaten on 25*.
Urooj Mumtaz paid tributes to her colleagues and reiterated her determination to do well at this event. "I am absolutely delighted.
"The team did exceptionally well again. We did a very good job in restricting them to 58, and bowled really well. I’m very proud of the team. It was an amazing win again.
"We have a very good spin attack backed up by some very good fast bowlers. We have to go all out for this tournament, we have to make it to the final, and we have to make it to the World Cup" said Mumtaz.
Their second win in the group stages of the Qualifiers effectively seals Pakistan a spot in the semi-finals, with a final match against Scotland on Thursday to determine the fixtures in the knock-out stages starting on Friday in Stellenbosch.
