Hockey Girls Win Bronze

The SPAR
South African Women’s hockey team finished their three week tour off in
brilliant style when they beat India 5 – 1 in the 3^rd and 4^th
play-off match, to take the bronze at the 4 Nations Women’s hockey tournament
in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on Saturday.

South Africa‘s first goal came in the 14^th
minute when skipper Marsha Marescia scored from penalty corner. The South
Africans double their score quickly there after, with Kathleen Taylor scoring
in the 15^th minute after an individual run that cut through the
Indian defence, netting with a perfect reverse stick.

India‘s only goal was scored in the 17^th
minute.

South Africa stepped up a gear in the second
half and Vida Ryan scored after a great set piece by Kate Hector and Tarryn
Bright, who crossed to Ryan, who made no mistake at the far post. Jen Wilson
scored South Africa’s
4^th goal after a clinically executed penalty corner (66). South Africa’s final goal came when Vida Ryan
scored her second goal of the match after a great build up that started deep in
South Africa’s
half.

The South
African team will now head home for a short rest before assembling in Durban for a training
camp.

In the final
of the tournament, hosts Netherlands
beat Great Britain
comprehensively with 5 – 1.
