Day one’s final game highlight fittingly saw defending champions Southern Gauteng battle against worthy rivals KwaZulu Natal to a 1-all score late into the game, before Lindsey Carlisle scored off a penalty to record a win for Southern Gauteng’s match.

 

Earlier in the day, the annual SPAR Inter Provincial Hockey Tournament saw victories for Eastern Province, Border and Peninsula in B Section, while Western Province, Northerns and Southern Gauteng earned maximum log points with victories in A Section against their opponents.

Eastern Province lead the day’s events with a convincing 4-1 win over Witwatersrand, only conceding a lone goal late in the match, with both Liezl Dorothy (vc) and Diane Jonker (c) scoring twice.

 

Next up Border withstood Free State with a goal off Lee-Anne Keet before half-time, added to another by substitute Vanessa Roy in the second half to take the match 2-0.

The final match contested by B Section foes Peninsula and Mynahs was settled in favour of the ladies from the Cape, care of two quick goals by captain Kerry Skinner and Vida Ryan, with the KZN Mynahs unable to trouble the scorer.

In the top-seed section, Western Province routed North West with a 5-0 clubbing, after leading 3-0 at half-time. Kate Hector scored twice in the first half with a goal from Megan Robertson, and Henna du Buisson clocked up another two in the second half to complete the bruising.

Next up was another whipping, this time Northerns conceding a 4-0 loss at the hands of Natal Midlands. After a slim single goal by Candice Forword separated the teams at the half-way mark, Northerns piled on the pressure with another two goals by Dirkie Chamberlain, and one by Louisa Moore.
